Brief History of Reiki

Reiki is a natural Japanese healing method, founded March of 1922 on the mountain tops of Mount Kurama Japan, by Dr. Mikao Usui, also known as Usui-Sensei. Upon receiving this gift from the universe, Usui-Sensei spent a great deal of his time traveling Japan, sharing and teaching Reiki with those seeking to understand its essence and wanting to experience its healing properties. The coming days before Usui-Sensi’s death on March 9, 1926, Usui-Sensi passed the light of Reiki onto Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who in turn taught and spread these teachings to many students.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi then passed the light unto one of his former students named Hawayo Takata. It was this transition of the Reiki light to Hawayo Takata, which allowed the teachings of Reiki to travel from Japan, all the way to the west, namely Hawaii and the rest of North America. Most teachings of Reiki in North America today are derived from the teachings and techniques of Takata. Usui-Sensei, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, and Hawayo Takata are the foundation of the Reiki lineage, and are the reason for the wide spread of this beautiful, healing art form.

In the Japanese culture, Reiki is the sum of two words, Rei (pronounced as Ray) translates to universal spirit, which is also known as God, Abba, Allah, Elohim, Jah, Jehova, Most High, among other known descriptions, and Ki (pronounced as Kee) translates to Life Energy. When both words are brought together, as Usui-Sensei did, you get, universal life-love energy that is guided by God. And since all things are energy, Reiki treatments help with the re-alignment of this beautiful, ever flowing energy that is present in all things.

How Does It Work?

The purpose of Reiki is to aid in the diminishing of stress while promoting relaxation and helping the body remember how to naturally self-heal, by filling ones vibratory need, and helping with restoring the Being to wholeness. This is achieved by the practitioner first, by placing their hands gently and strategically on the chakra and meridian points of the body. This allows the Reiki to funnel through the practitioner and flow into the individual receiving the treatment. Reiki is truly a beautiful healing modality for the mind, body, and soul.

It is said that Reiki has helped aid in the healing of various ailments such as; the common cold, headaches, stiffness, digestive pains, cancer and leprosy, to mention a few. Keep in mind, that while the majority of people who receive Reiki treatments commonly experience a beautiful sense of relaxation, results of healing vary between each person. Since Reiki is a natural healing method, healing through the use of energy, Reiki compliments and works in conjunction with other forms of medical care you are utilizing from, licensed Physicians, Naturopaths or other licensed Health Care Professionals. The reason why Reiki works so well on its own, and complements forms of health care, is the simple fact that Reiki bypasses the symptom(s) and travels to the root cause.
