“Life isn’t about the breaths we take, it’s about the moments that take our breath away.”
Think about that for a minute…Many of us have heard and used this quote from the movie Hitch, but yet, many of us still don’t truly understand the full meaning behind this.
Let me explain my understanding of this quote to you, so that you can see and implement the beautiful message, into your life.
What this quote is saying is, that life is all about the experiences we create for ourselves. The moments that take our breath away, are the very reasons why we choose to continue to live. These moments make us tick, and most importantly, make us happy. Without these moments, our lives would be very “blah”. To be honest, what I’ve notice over the years, the reason why so many of us are unhappy, is the simple fact that we do not take the time to create enough experiences in our life. We get stuck in a routine and believe that the weekend is the only time in which we can create these exciting experiences, or believing that we need a certain amount of money to do so. That’s the beautiful thing about creating experiences for ourselves. We don’t need to wait until the weekend nor do we need a certain amount of money to create them.
Take a break from reading this right now, and close your eyes. Think back to when you were a child. When times were simple. Think about all the experiences you created without money and when you got birthday/Christmas/holiday money. Then think about all the experiences you have created for yourself over the years, up to this very moment. Allow yourself, right now, 5 minutes to do this visualization exercise.
Now that you have done that, notice how all the greatest experiences you have been a part of, started off very simple and happened on a regular basis. Notice as time went on and you started to “grow up” and those experiences that helped shape you into the person you are today, got a little more complicated, and were experienced on a less frequent basis. Notice how creating less experiences has effected your overall happiness and slowed the growth of the person you desire to be.
This needs to STOP right here. Take action and just START creating more experiences for yourself, so that you can continue to enjoy life to the fullest and continue onward with creating your “Personal Legend”. Creating memorable experiences are as easy as going shopping with a friend or family member, grabbing a bite to eat for lunch with a friend, going to the park and kicking the soccer ball around, playing Frisbee, going to the beach, renting a cottage for a weekend, grabbing Starbucks, going to Tim’s and getting a double double with a Boston cream doughnut, playing video games, taking a road trip, taking a trip around the world, going to the movies, going on a date, working out, doing charitable work, and many other things which could be listed for days.
Whatever it is that you enjoy doing which creates a positive experience, make sure to always make enough time to do these things. That is what this quote is talking about. Once you realize this, and start making time to do these things, that’s when you’ll truly be living the life you so desire, while moulding yourself into the highest version of You; the self that you’ve worked so hard to be. Take chances, create experiences, and live life.
“Find life experiences and swallow them whole. Travel. Meet many people. Go down some dead ends and explore dark alleys. Try everything. Exhaust yourself in the glorious pursuit of life.”
– Lawrence K. Fish
Because, as we now know…
Life isn’t about the breaths we take; it’s about the moments that take our breath away.
